For the second year in a row, GCAMP hosted summer manufacturing tours for young people in the Chicagoland area. Our 60+ tour participants included students, parents, teachers, and counselors,
as well our new friends from the Boys and Girls Club of South Elgin and APS Training Academy in Aurora. The five tours provided an opportunity to get an insider’s look into how the things we use every day are made. Plus, they enabled students to get a sneak peek at their possible future careers.
A lasting first impression
For most of the tour participants, it was their first eye-opening step inside the world of manufacturing. Students and parents marveled at how engineering and cutting-edge technology come together to produce products with mind-blowing speed and pin-point accuracy. Teachers on the tour were delighted to see some of their in-class lessons come to life through real-world processes.
Highlighting pathways
For the manufacturers, however, this was their chance to shine a spotlight on what makes their companies special - their diverse employees. During tours, students were able to ask employees questions about their jobs and their professional and educational backgrounds. While the students clearly enjoyed meeting everyone, it might have been the young apprentices who made the biggest impression on the students and their parents!
Tours make a difference
Manufacturing tours give students the opportunity to envision their future and discover the path to achieve their dreams. Thank you to all of the manufacturers who hosted a tour this summer! You are building a bridge to manufacturing’s future!
